FAQ

Patients are usually seen for the first time in consultation lasting between 15 and 30 minutes and can assess the difficulty of treatment and estimate the cost.  At this consultation you have your treatment options carefully explained to you, and you will also be able to ask any questions you may have.

The duration of a treatment depends mainly on the number of root canals and the degree of difficulty of the treatment. Most treatments last between 1 and 2 hours and are completed in one or two sessions.

Your dentist has referred you to a specialist because the tooth to treat presents difficulties. This can be difficult access, a tooth with a crown, a tooth with a complicated root post, a complex anatomy, a calcified tooth, obstacles in the root canal, perforations to be repaired, retreatments. In addition, endodontists are equipped with special tools for these situations.

A local anesthetic is used while the treatment is performed. The tooth is isolated by a rubber dam system that prevents contamination by saliva and allows a good chemical disinfection of the root canals. All the work is done under an operating microscope.
After the root canals have been cleaned, disinfected and filled, a temporary filling is put in place.
This temporary filling can remain at most 3 weeks, which is why the patient must return to his general dentist in this time lapse to avoid bacterial contamination by saliva.
When the root canal therapy has been completed, a record of your treatment and finale x-rays are sent to your dentist.

After endodontic treatment, pain may be present for a few days. A painful chewing sensation can sometimes last up to 2-3 weeks. This discomfort is part of the normal process of treatment. It comes from the inflammatory reaction in the bone that occurs after endodontic treatment. To relieve you, a prescription of anti-inflammatory or pain relievers can be prescribed.

  • In some cases, postoperative swelling can occur within 48 hours. If such a case occurs do not hesitate to contact us. Antibiotics may be necessary.
  • The temporary filling must be changed as soon as possible by your general dentist. The temporary filling can stay for a maximum of 3 weeks.
  • Until your appointment with your dentist, it is advisable to leave the treated tooth at rest. It is not recommended to chew any kind of sticky and hard foods on this tooth.
